University Grenoble Alpes (UGA), ranked among top French universities, has been awarded by the Investments for the Future Program (IFA) to set-up graduate schools at Master level in order to strengthen the impact and international attractiveness of their training through research. The Graduate School (GS) brings together six academic components of UGA and its partners within Idex: CEA, CNRS, Inria, CHU Grenoble Alpes, Inserm and INRAE as well as large-scale facilities (ESRF, ILL, GMBL, EMBL). UGA has identified 15 thematic programs within the Graduate School, among which a thematic program called Quantum, which is dedicated to quantum information, quantum engineering, quantum matter and quantum technologies. Grenoble offers indeed a large choice of training opportunities in this field, ranging from established Master's programs in condensed matter physics to a newly opened Master's program in quantum information and quantum engineering.

The Quantum thematic program offers a specific high-level training on the quantum properties of device, matter and light. The program deals with all the aspects of quantum sciences, including quantum devices (semiconductor, superconductor, molecular, and optical qubits), quantum materials (bulk materials, nanostructures, and 2D systems), quantum information theory, quantum communication, quantum computation, quantum metrology, and technical developments for quantum technologies. It also includes multidisciplinary aspects in computer science and mathematics which are relevant for quantum physics and applications. All these topics are currently investigated in the Grenoble laboratories affiliated to the Labex Lanef, Minos, and Persyval.

The objective of this Graduate School program Quantum is to attract top level French and foreign undergraduate students willing to be part of the development of quantum technologies, and to promote their integration within the leading research laboratories in Grenoble and in France. Through different academic programs, it offers to students the proper academic background to start a PhD in a fundamental or R&D research laboratory, and prepare them to a professional career in academic research or in a R&D high-tech company. The program also offers mobility grants and scholarships for international students.

Scholarships

Call for UGA M1 and Phelma 2A Quantum scholarships : pre-selection call is open, deadline May 15th.
The Quantum thematic program offers two-year scholarships to the best international students, with a high-school diploma (baccalauréat) obtained outside France. The amount of the scholarship is 13 kEuros for two years + 3 kEuros to cover the Master 2 internship allowance. It covers the living cost of the student during his stay in Grenoble and the mandatory gratification during his/her Master 2 research internships. Applications are open from January to May, before the start of the studies in September. The preselection procedure is explained in the document : Call for Quantum scholarships.

In parallel to the above scholarship application, students have also to apply to a first-year academic track associated to the Quantum thematic program : M1 Nanophysics Quantum Physics (UGA) or 2A IPHY engineer track (Phelma). Check procedures and deadlines in the section Admission.

Call for UGA M2 and Phelma 3A Quantum scholarships :
A call will open in Spring 2024 (check regularly this page).

Curriculum

The Quantum thematic program offers 12 ECTS of labelling disciplinary courses (6 ECTS during first year and 6 ECTS during second year) covering experimental and theoretical aspects of quantum physics. Theses disciplinary courses are completed by a multidisciplinary training taught via seminars focused in the emergence of quantum in other disciplinary fields (computer science, mathematics, philosophy) and in industry (big companies, start-ups). These seminars are followed by a lunch during which students can discuss with the invited speaker. The compulsory labelling courses are the following :

Affiliated tracks

The academic tracks affiliated to the Quantum thematic program consist of an inner circle of Master's and Engineer tracks which propose common courses and deliver a Quantum label to the students :

and an outer circle of Master's programs with which pluridisciplinary actions will be developed :

The Engineer and Master students affiliated to the Quantum program will be invited to perform a PhD in a research laboratory, or in a high-tech company via industrial PhD grants. The affiliated Doctoral Schools are Physics (ED Phys) and Electronics-Electrotechnics-Automatics-and-Signal-Treatment (ED EEATS).
