Grenoble, european capital of micro and nanotechnologies

In this section

The University Grenoble Alpes is rated 1st french university for nanosciences and nanotechnologies by the Shanghai Ranking 2018.

Grenoble/Crolles complex is one of the greatest micro-electronics cluster in the world, also known as the French silicon valley. As the race towards miniaturization drives the costs of integrated circuits, Grenoble has become a major center for nanotechnologies and nanosciences, featuring more than 22 000 jobs in the domain. The 20-hectares micro-nanotechnology campus MINATEC brings together 2 400 researchers, 1 200 students and 600 technology-transfer professionals, and boasts some of the most advanced equipment including 13 000 m2 of clean rooms. MINATEC is unique in Europe and ranks among the world’s leading centers for micro and nanotechnology research.

As smart technologies diffuse in all domains, the Grenoble area is also very active in nanomedicine, nanobiotechnologies, soft nanosciences, and new energy technologies. About 40 000 jobs relate to advanced technologies and the Innovallée at Meylan is the 1st french science park dedicated to innovation.

The Grenoble area is home to major european research facilities active in the domain of nanosciences, the European Synchrotron Facility, the Laue Langevin Institute, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Together with national research institutes (CNRS, CEA) the public research in the Grenoble area represents 3 000 researchers and more than 30 public laboratories in the field of the nano’s.
